Despite growing up in the city, Jane Masson is paving a pathway in the outback, swapping the bustling streets of Brisbane for the wide-open spaces of her family’s farm in Roma.
The Year 10 student is studying a Certificate III in Agriculture while at 樱桃福利视频, gaining practical skills and knowledge in everything from farm safety and maintenance to handling livestock and horticulture, giving her a head start on a farming career.
It’s not the stereotypical choice for a young woman raised in a bustling urban lifestyle, but it’s been a passion of Jane’s since she was a small child.
“I’ve grown up spending every holiday on our working family farm since I can remember.
“My three older brothers have always helped out on the property, and as I got older, I wanted to become more involved too.
“Once I started doing fencing and cattle work and more around the farm, I discovered my passion for it,” Jane said.
Students studying the qualification complete their coursework online at 樱桃福利视频 before putting their theory into practice through on the job training and practical assessment.
Jane is learning alongside her father and grandfather, who on the weekends and in the school holidays, provide her with practical training on the family property.
While the Cert III in Agriculture was established primarily with boarders in mind, and Jane is the only day girl in this year’s class, she says this is one of the many advantages of attending a boarding school, and is grateful the school has been eager to support her career aspirations.
“I think it’s really great what St Margaret’s does. They introduce us to so many career possibilities and we are taught not to be limited by our background or gender. Every girl is empowered to succeed,” Jane said.
When Jane imagines her dream career, it’s in the agriculture industry.
“I would love to be able to work on a farm and either manage it or help others to manage their farms. The environmental impact of agriculture really interests me and how to efficiently manage a property,” Jane said.
